I picked this bike lock because it hits a lot of great selling points (more info below). I wanted something better to protect my bike while I go into shops or restaurants. I exclusively commute on my bike, so I’m forced to leave my bike outside and in the open. This lock gives me the peace of mind that nobody will take my bike while I’m away. The lock works very smoothly and I have never had a hangup with the key. The coating does an excellent job at protecting the paint on my bike (no scratches!). It is quite heavy, but it’s high quality stretched steel. The lock mount is oddly shaped and can be difficult to find a place to mount it onto. I keep the lock in my backpack or satchel instead.Pros:-Hardened, stretched steel-Double bolted square shaped locks-Smooth working lock-Protective rubber coating-Medium shackle length-Two keys, one comes with a light-Replacement keys are easy to get from ABUSCons:-It’s heavy-Mount is tricky to useHere are some specifics:It can resist ~13 tons of cutting force, ~7 tons of pulling force, and 1,300 Nm of twisting force. It uses a double-bolted square shackle. The square-in-square shape prevents twisting. That doubles the locking force as well as resistance against tools.

I don’t know what is going on with Amazon these days, QC is in the toilet. Seems like 30% or more of my purchases need to be returned, either because they are more than lightly used, damaged, or just poor quality. I got this lock and it was obviously used, and quite damaged. I returned it immediately, of course, and ended up buying one (for full retail, quite a bit more expensive, like an extra $75) at a local bike shop, which carried Abus, but had to order this model. I guess I could have reordered one and hoped it worked out the second time, but I lost patience. The lock itself is great, probably the best U-lock made, period, but certainly the best at this weight. No bolt cutter is going to get through this thing. Of course, thieves in big cities use angle grinders, which will cut through this, but at least it will take a few minutes and make a bunch of noise. I would give 5 stars for the lock, and 1 star for the terrible amazon experience – and I am getting so sick of getting used and damaged stuff, or the wrong product from amazon I have started looking for stuff at brick and mortar stores again, and would rather pay the premium then have to keep returning things to Amazon, or trying to fix things myself. On-Guard makes great locks also, and Kryptonite makes one equal to this (but thicker – 14mm vs 13mm – and heavier, though a bit less expensive) as well as the NY line, which is even tougher, but at 16mm, very, very heavy. I also have an Abus 9mm hardened steel chain lock, which I really like. I use either the chain or the U-lock with a cable to secure the other wheel (although cables are easy to cut, seems hardly worth it to a thief just for a wheel set, but I guess on a slow day, they will do it).

The choice was this or the Kryptonite. The ABUS won over Kryptonite with the strength test (search youtube)The Kryptonite did win with the insurance coverage offer…BUTThe Kryptonite insurance coverage comes with a requirement that makes it just about useless.A) It requires you to send back the broken/damaged lockB) You have to take the same day pic of the bike lockedChances are if your bike gets stolen, the thief won’t leave the busted lock. Then you have to remember to take a current pic every day you lock your bike. Based on that and the general reviews of the coverage, I decided to just go with the stronger ABUS lock.Side Note:As great as the mounting bracket is (sold separately)…it will only fit on a standard size bike frame. I have a 2019 Specialized Stumpjumper XL Mountain bike and I cannot use the mounting/holder bracket because it won’t fit around the frame as the frame is pretty thick. So I just carry it in my water pack bag.I would have given it 5 stars if the bracket worked too seeing as I had to purchase that separately.

I am editing my review after contacting DealExperts about the issue. As you can read in my original post, I had some issues with this lock, which was very confusing, as Abus is a top-notch brand and this is one of the best locks on the market. After my beloved bike Peaches was stolen in downtown L.A., I couldn’t handle another loss. I’m a full-time student with 3 jobs; my friends kindly kicked in for a new bike, but it fell to me to pick out a lock. After struggling with the lock for 2 months and juggling all my jobs/school, I reached out to Amazon customer service. They said it was “out of the return window timeframe” and referred me to the dealer. The dealer said it was “outside the return window timeframe” and referred me to Amazon C.S. I went back to DealExperts and BEGGED THEM TO TAKE PITY ON ME, as I’m a student with one only way to get around, my bike. For good measure, I wrote this bad review.DealExperts responded immediately with a return auth for me to give to Amazon C.S., and after a lengthy phone call with Amazon, they shipped me a new lock and it arrived in 24 hours! I still need to send the defective one back, but I just need to print the label, which is free.I’m super relieved and happy. The new lock works like a dream. I would definitely do business with DealExperts again.Original Post-I was so excited about this lock. I researched extensively and decided on this one, as it’s as close to top of the line as it gets. But, the key has been stiff in the lock. I ride EVERY day, so this became a thing pretty quickly. I thought, NBD, it’s new, just needs some use. Nope. It’s been 2 months, and I still have to attempt to lock it 8,9,10 times EVERY time. I try turning it around, I try wiggling. I tried bike lube. I tried everything! Now I’m not sure what to do. Everything else about it is amazing. π
