I’ve had these tires for years – Smoke on the rear, Dart on the Front – and I keep going back to them. All terrain use, they hold air well over time, the sidewall is rigid enough to keep the tire from deforming at deep lean angles, the wire bead seats the tire well, the price is nice ($20-$30 / tire) and these tires are “Goldilocks choice” – not too hard, not too soft…juuuuust right. In NorCal, I use these tires in 2.1 diameter, wire bead (don’t even notice the extra weight) on my full suspension bike and they work well on all surfaces: the asphalt en route to the off-road trails, hard pack trail use, deeper dirt, moderate sand…even broken asphalt and potholes around town. I don’t ride in deep mud, so that doesn’t apply for me.These replaced Hutchinson Pythons, and those tires scared the hell out of me on multiple occasions when cornering. I checked the inflation, checked the seat of the bead, took off…and wiped out on a corner. So, a quick purchase at Amazon and I chucked the Pythons for the Panaracers. The difference was profound, as it usually is when I go back to the Panaracers.I also like WTB tires for off-road only use, but there’s a lot of rolling resistance on hard pack and asphalt, and the softer compound wears a bit more rapidly. The Panaracers are just perfect and really confidence inspiring when leaning…trust me on that one.

Peruse what you will, but in the end, if you choose anything, buy the Dart and Smoke, otherwise you have wasted your money. These two tires will keep your keester on the trail and out of the brambles. I have ridden them for more than 20 years, racing, gravel touring, rippin’ single-track, and riding into the woods for mushroom hunts. Old mountain bikers will tell you…this tire will keep you safe and secure. They are sticky, grippy, edgy, and trackin’ hunks of rubber. Best tires even made (and I have spent thousands on MTB tires – this combo is the best).I hope that one day they are available for 27.5″ and 29″ rides.

I love the smoke&dart tire set, I run a full suspension 26lbs bike, there’s almost no way to get that lightweight without tires like these, or spending a fortune on the very lightest of carbon components. This is my second set of these.

So happy to find they still make this great classic 26″ rear tire. Nothing better for excellent traction on steep dry dirt hills.

Been using these for 3 decades, great for my needs.

I have to differ from the other reviewers. I got this as a rear tire for my hard tail 1999 Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo, replacing the original worn WTB Velociraptor. I ride reasonably technical terrain near NYC (Sprain Brook, Blue Mountain, Sterling Forest) and have been disappointed by the Smokeβs performance especially in wet conditions. Iβve found that it collects mud easily and loses traction quickly in wet conditions, leaving me spinning my rear wheel on climbs. And this might be my imagination, but the tread already seems to be showing lots of wear after only a few months of semi-regular riding (2 days/month). Finally, and this is obviously just personal preference, I find that the retro look ends up being a little too retro; thereβs a reason that tires shifted to black wall!So Iβm going back to the WTB Velociraptor, and I would recommend the same for others looking for a 26β x 2.1β rear tire.

Beautiful tire but oddly narrow for a 2.1. I’ve ridden that size for 25 years and knew immediately something was off the moment I saw them. Despite a label on the tire of 26×2.1 my LBS mechanic confirmed I wasn’t losing my mind when he measured them at 1.8 with his calipers. He explained how some measurements can vary depending on the rim but even he was perplexed by how they could be that narrow.

I had some Smokes 20 years ago and bought a new set after rebuilding my old bike for my son. They are still fantastic tires. Easily going up hills that I couldnβt before.
