The I tried this helmet is so my wife and I can talk while out riding without shouting at each other…that has still to be tested…Size runs true enough to sizing My head is smaller, I needed a 54, ordered the small and the fit was at the large end of the adjustment so spot on. There is a large sizing adjustment so this will adjust a lot downward in size. One point to note is the pressure is felt on your forehead and the back of your head. My other helmet is even all round so the Sena is shaped just a little wider in the sides but only marginally from my Giro. Not a deal breaker, just different. The fit is comfortable. It is slightly heavier, which is understandable, it has more in it.The buttons are easy to feel for and operate. Learning the operation sequences will take a little practice but I downloaded the manual and keep that on my phone. The SENA software is butt ugly and semi functional. The Phone app for Android is more generic for SENA products and wants access to everything on your phone to allow it to work. This is because SENA make other products and have not yet developed individual Apps. Why my helmet needs access to my camera and photos to run the App is just stupid. A lot of people, including myself just don’t load the App because of the permissions issues. You can download a Windows or Mac app to run updates and do some basic customization, good enough for the purpose but the app is clearly an afterthought of design and user interface. A lot of room there for improvement.Sound quality ranks the speaker with the best of early 1900’s gramophones. Utterly lacking in base and any ability to render a musical note. It is after all, a voice comms device first and foremost, not a hifi speaker system. It will render voice calls clearly. It does have a built in radio which I like, just hum the base section yourself. Overall for connecting riders and allowing them to communicate, top marks, style pretty good, fits nicely, and price wise, cheaper than my dump not smart Giro. My wife and I tested the communication system and while out riding it is fantastic! No more shouting at each other. No wind noise at all, except your own heavy breathing. Amazingly clear and range is well over a block.Update 8/31/2020 – I tried the helmet for a short ride and the padding on the forehead felt sharp and uncomfortable. Others have noted this. What it is, is that the forehead padding is heat sealed along the seam, and this seam can push into your forehead with and uncomfortable feeling sharp. My solution was to move the paddling so the seam is lower (outside) the helmet by about 1/8″ and this solved the problem. The seam is no longer sandwiched between my forehead and the front of the helmet. I rode 30 miles this weekend with no issue. My long term fix is to replace the padding with some thinner, softer, third party padding. I think this will make the helmet fit my head a little better and more comfortable..

As to the intercom and actual function of the helmet, thatβs very, very good. Really excellent I think. I canβt confirm their claims for distance but certainly a couple, three hundred yards has no impact on clarity. And, the sound is quite clear. So kudos for that. I knew going in that this lower model would not let me play music thru its bluetooth and have the intercom working as well (the EVO does, but not the basic R1), but I do wish I had bought the EVO for that feature now. On longer rides weβd like to share audiobooks or just some music, but the only way to do that is to carry an external speaker and let the helmet pick it up thru the std mike. The other thing I have to learn for this helmet is to not curse my riding partners out loud anymoreβ¦even a mumble is clearly heard by everyone elseβ¦so be warned. Itβs hilarious when they are cursing someone else and thinking it is under their breath, but, not so fun when they gripe at you at what they think is sotto voce for some perceived offense but which comes thru loud and clear.Would I recommend to anyone? Absolutely. The joy of not having to yell back over your shoulder, and not having to tell other riders for the 50th time on a ride that you canβt hear them is well worth it. However, I would note the above caveats, and perhaps recommend people look at the Sena PI instead (bluetooth version of Senaβs system that just attaches to the straps of you existing helmet)β¦might get around all the above and below issues (see negatives below) and keep you in your old favorite helmet. And, if your group includes some with R1 and some with PI, they are supposed to work together.Complaint #1. So after 6 months (3 of which was winter, so no riding), the lining / padding is junk. Most of the padding is separating from the fabric which attaches it to the Velcro in several places, and the padding at the rear of the helmet is gone. I submitted a ticket to Sena asking them to replace the liner, I mean really, My Bell helmet was 4 years old and had close to 15k miles on it before the first padding piece fell off. 6 months and Senaβs just all dissolves seems pretty chintzyβ¦and it is supposed to be still under warranty. Sena is sending me a replacement liner set and chin strap pad under warranty, but I am concerned that I will need to do a Subscribe and Save to get a new set every 6 months or so after the warranty expires.Complaint #2. I typically wear a medium in helmets (giro, Bell, others) but a large Sena is uncomfortably small front to back. And, thatβs the largest they sell. I am considering filing off some of the styrofoam in the back to enlarge. Not sure anyone who would wear a large helmet in any other brand could ever even get a Sena on their head.Complaint #3: ventilation and access thru the holes. For some unfathomable reason, the vent holes all taper as they go inward many with as much as a 50% reduction in width. So it looks at first glance as if it may be similar to other quality helmets, but the holes are wider on the outside than they are by the time they get to your head which is not so βcoolβ for ventilation. Maybe that was to reduce the amount of heavy hard plastic on the outside? But what it gives you is a bonus feature in addition to the the reduced airflow: No way in heck are you ever going to get a finger in there to scratch that itch unless it just happens to be in the one or two holes that are large enough to get a finger in. Not gonna happen. Now you have to carry a small twig to reach into the holes. So now you can be a git more granola and carry that twig behind your ear or in your teeth. Fun!Take a look at the physical helmet and compare its size to any regular helmet, and note that it is significantly wider (over an inch wider than my old one). Not a huge deal, but if you think this is going to look fashionable, probably not. Looks a bit more like wearing an equestrian helmet on a bike. Iβm not a fashionista, but I hate even looking in the mirror to put on my sunscreen with this monster on. I get that they had to put the speakers somewhere, but itβs a bit shocking how much wider they look.Last negative. They made the R1 (and PI) incompatible with the EVO helmets so you canβt incrementally upgrade. So decide now if you want the features of the EVOβ¦because otherwise your whole group has to upgrade, or everyone has to stay on R1. Pretty lousy incompatibility given that they only make 2 real models.

We love our helmets. We can now talk to each other privately, without yelling or having to be right next to each other. We have told others about it so they can get one and we can talk as a group. The reception is great and the mics and speakers are high quality. Highly recommend.
