I ordered this to build my collection of quality bicycle maintenance tools. When it arrived, I immediately noticed that this thing in small–about the size of my pinky finger from end to end. That said, it is constructed from thick metal, and all the edges are nicely machined and deburred. I think it is very well constructed and beautifully finished, which I have come to expect from Park Tool products in general. So no complaints there. My only pique is in the fact that this is made in Taiwan as it says on the packaging. Many other Park Tool products are made in the USA, but they decided to make this tool where other cheaper bike tool companies make their tools as well. Nothing against Taiwan of course, but I think it would be nice to have the option to buy products made from around the world, including the US.I know that Wheels Manufacturing of Colorado and Abbey Bike Tools of Oregon have similar Shimano Crank Preload Tools–made in the USA–that cost just a few bucks more than this one from Park Tool, and I would have gotten one of those to support these tool companies had I known whence came this particular tool. Still, I have several other Park Tools that are made in the USA (PT is headquartered in Minnesota).

I used this tool to be able to upgrade my 2017 Trek Fuel EX8 drivetrain to 1x. I’m not a bike mechanic but perform simple maintenance like brakes and chain cleaning to keep the bike running smoothly. The tool was easy to use and worked just as advertised.

Much more sturdy and robust for tightening and removing the adjusting cap on Shimano cranks than the cheap plastic tools. Especially useful for removing a cap that had been over-torqued previously.Just be cautious to only torque to hand tight when installing. This metal tool allows you to tighten much more than needed so be keen to that while using.

The typical old shimano plastic tool works, but this works SO much better… it may not be a revolutionary change or add any functionality that the basic plastic one doesn’t also have but it’s just so much easier to use, the ergonomics are better and it just works.

I like the winged grip on this one better than the round one. Someone always over tightens the nut, so this one gives you more leverage to loosen.

I bought stages power arms for road and gravel bikes and picked up the little round shimano tool to remove the plug. Before I received said items I was looking at a youtube video and saw this guy which looked much better. Indeed, as it turned out, not only did the shimano tool, a cheap plastic disk with a grooved edge, not fit very well into the plug, mine were somewhat stuck in there and I would have had to get a set of pliers out to turn it. This thing gives you the leverage you need and also has the little hook to pull up the retaining clip. Park tools are always the way to go in my experience.

As advertised. Needed to remove crank arm from crankset and it worked as it should. A Park Tool will be a premium price but you get what you pay for. Quality youβve come to expect from Park!
