   What can I say. It’s a Garmin. It’s going to work. I would have bought one model down, but there was a $200 discount at the time of purchase direct from Garmin and also via Amazon, which made this the same exact price as the lessor model – so no brainer there.I’ve been a long time Garmin customer. Recently I use CarPlay with my car, but for over a decade previously I also had Garmin car navigation devices, from StreetPilot, to Nuvi, etc. They’re rock solid.This device has some trade offs. The touch screen isn’t the most responsive. The screen doesn’t scream “high brightness, great contrast”, but it’s visible in all but the most direct glare of sunlight, and has an incredible battery life – which is important for those long rides!Functionality wise, it works well with other devices (pairing to speed, cadence, heart sensors, plus a front and rear Bontrager smart lighting system). The directions work well, as I tend to wander, and then when I feel my ‘gas tank’ getting low just tell it to navigate me home. I probably don’t flex it’s muscle with all of the various options, but just to get around, and to see how your heart, speed, distance, etc are going it’s fantastic.Just not the best screen or touch sensors, which I suspect was a deliberate trade off to get something with a decent price and long battery life.Kudos to Garmin for including about a billion mounting accessories. Two disc based mounts, plenty of those silicon bands in multiple sizes, plus a out front mount are all included. If you can’t mount this to your bike, you probably aren’t doing it right.

   The touch screen is huge and excellent. Very easy to customize to view multiple desired metrics during a ride. I upgraded from a Garmin Edge 510 so this is a big leap up in capabilities. Was going to get an Edge 520 but the 1030 was selling for a $200 discount. Have read that the 520 is just as good. Would have given the 1030 5 stars all around, but within two months the battery started behaving oddly – went from 70+% to zero overnight. Couldn’t get it to start so had to do a full reboot at which point it suddenly showed 20% power. We will see if it is happy or if it continues.

   I was hoping that my first head unit purchase, after using my phone for years, would be the upgrade I needed for better battery life and rain protection. Well this product succeeds with those features; however there is a widely publicized flaw I missed–the mounting plate that attaches the unit to the mount is weak and fails.In my case, I used this on fewer than 10 rides before having it eject itself from the mount after hitting a bump. Once I recovered it from a ditch on the side of the road, nearly everyone in the group I was riding with informded me that they had the same problem or knew about it!When I contacted Garmin they responded immediately, but asked me to pay $140 for a refurbished unit (possibly the box of other returns that have replaced cases) and only a 90-day warranty on the new unit. They also referred me to a third party company that has built its whole business model on selling $25 fix kits that require you to drill holes and use glue to attach an adequately engineered mounting plate.After I pushed back on Garmin, they took an extra step and determined that my unit was manufactured prior to July, 2020 when they apparently upgraded this part of the unit. They are shipping me a NEW unit now, and offered to either wait until they got the broken on, or to send me the new one ASAP and charge me a refundable deposit. I hope it works out, and I’ll udpate this review regardless.

   I purchased this since I wanted to upgrade from my edge 500. I’m glad I did. The touch screen is such a welcome feature. I installed it on my bike in 20 minutes. I took that long cause I had to change out the cadence sensor battery and I couldn’t find my stash of batteries otherwise it would’ve been 5-10 minutes. The edge picks up the sensors quickly. The HRM strap is the only one I sometimes have issues with, it will lose connection and not read. I solve that problem by putting some saliva on the pads and it reads instantly. Can’t wait to try it outdoors.

   Love the size, battery, connectivity to Di2. Disappointed with maps. Have to reach out to my phone occasionally. Maybe Garmin should allow mirroring iphone?
