I had never heard of a dummy hub until I stumbled across this Park Tool product while searching for something else. I wasnβt totally sure if it would earn a spot in my shop, but since it was pretty inexpensive, I decided to order one and see. This simple little tool has greatly improved my bike maintenance and cleaning. Iβm somewhat obsessive about keeping my drivetrain clean, but before the dummy hub, I would mostly leave my rear wheel in place and use a variety of methods to clean the chain, cassette, jockey wheels and chainrings. I did a decent job, but nothing compared to removing the wheel and having full access to all components. I now find grime in places I hadnβt seen before. I also find that while having the rear wheel removed, I take off the chain more frequently and do a deep cleaning there. Itβs just simple to take the chain on and off with the dummy hub. Iβm going to travel with my bike in a few weeks and plan to remove the wheels so I can transport the bike inside an SUV (for security). The dummy hub will be perfect for that and Iβll use a chain cover to protect the carβs interior. So, yes this simple little tool earned a spot in my shop. And even more, Iβd replace it today if it went missing.

I was a bike mechanic in the 1970’s and have used an earlier version of this tool for many years. With advent of disc brake bikes, I needed to change this tool for one that works with thru-axle systems. This is it. Fortunately, I can see that this toll should work fine with either thru-axle bikes or the older caliper brake bikes. Nice! I also appreciate that when shifting the rear derailer with this tool, the chain track is able to move in-out as intended. The older tool prevents that natural motion.

This dummy hub is probably the second best tool I have purchased for cleaning my bicycle chain. The first being the Park Cyclone Bicycle chain scrubber. Using the dummy hub has made not only access to the chain better for cleaning but without the wheel on the bike, I can do a better job of cleaning the chain. Installing and using the dummy hub is fast and easy. I wish my bike shop would have told me about them years ago instead, I learned about this great invention on You Tube. My recommendation is…use it, you will love it as much as I do.

Park Tools are always reliable and do exactly what they were made to do. Makes cleaning the chain and the rear cassette much easier. I also use the Park Tool Chain Scrubber. Someone else wrote a review saying this is an βunnecessary toolβ and yeah I suppose. But if you really want to keep your whole drivetrain clean when defunking your chain, then removing the rear wheel and thoroughly cleaning the cassette is a must. Also, with the rear wheel off you get a better opportunity to clean your rear derailleur.

It only takes a short time to remove your rear tire and slip this on your bike. It makes it pretty easy to cycle your chain through cleaning and oiling. Like most of Park Tool’s items, this is a quality product at a reasonable price. You can live without it, but it is worth it if you do a thorough cleaning frequently.
